STET-VIP: A Legacy of Leadership and Service

In 1995, when Dr. Vivian A. Gonzales became the first woman Dean of Students at the University of the Philippines in Los Baños, she pioneered the Students’ Transformation and Enrichment for Truth (STET) as her vision for the Office of Student Affairs.

Dr. Gonzales later included Values Integration and Promotion (VIP), which addresses the lack of social responsibility among the youth. She opened the VIP seminars to over 180 student organizations.

A professor and practitioner of Development Management, she created the STET-VIP as a multi/inter-disciplinary and integrative approach to values education and community outreach. It is a model that continues today as an accredited BIR Donee institution.

Dr. Gonzales applied the same approach in instilling values in cadets during her tenure as Commandant of the UPLB-Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), the first woman Commandant in 100 years.

In a nutshell, it was basically how Dr. Gonzales trained all her children and anyone fortunate to attend her leadership seminars:

  • Stand at the flag.
  • Kneel at the cross.
  • Always strive for honor and excellence.
  • Use your gifts to serve others for God’s glory.

She registered the STET-VIP with the Securities and Exchange Commission as an NGO in 2015

The STET-VIP, as an NGO, responded quickly to social needs. For instance, when the government implemented a Community Quarantine to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Luzon in 2020, the STET-VIP immediately responded by sending food and medical supplies to front liners. In response to a clamor from communities affected by the COVID-19 lockdown, STET-VIP rolled out mobile kitchens serving 3,000 meals daily. It also assisted 295 families left homeless in a fire that razed Delpan, Tondo, on April 15, 2020.

For the past 28 years, Dr. Gonzales’ vision has been kept alive by the prayers and generosity of family and friends, including those in Rotary International, where she is Charter President of RC Makiling, Los Baños.

At 73, Dr. Gonzales’ only wish is for STET-VIP to carry on “advancing integrity of character and competence in service to humanity among different members of society.”
