Pinoy driver in Riyadh asks to keep job in Kingdom

Saudi Arabia is a good destination for overseas Filipino workers but many of them have not had the good luck to get what local recruitment agencies promised them.

One disappointed recruit is Villy Perez Barroga, Riyadh-based trailer driver of Masafat Al Madinah Co. His employer is Shryam Al Qubani.

Speaking on behalf of other Filipino drivers, Barroga is asking for help so he and his colleagues  can work for another employer after they finish their current contracts in eight months or so.

“Gusto po sana namin pagkatapos ng kontrata ay lilipat na kami sa ibang employer. Wala kaming naiipon at delayed ang sahod namin,” he said.

(We want to work for another employer when we finish our contracts. We have been unable to save and our salaries are delayed.)

Aside from a two-month salary delay, which has happened three times since they arrived in the Kingdom on Feb. 16, 2021, the Filipinos also have had no proper accommodations and are without air-conditioning. It is hot in the Kingdom, especially in the summer.

Their accommodations are inside the company premises where the trailers and trucks are parked.

They also do not have health insurance.

Barroga and other Filipino drivers have planned to go to the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO Riyadh) to complain about their situation but they do not have the time because they are always  traveling.

Tulad ngayon, nasa biyahe kami at nagpapahinga lang kaya naipadala namin itong mensahe namin para humingi ng tulong,” he said.

(Like now, we are traveling. We are just on a break so we were able to send our message to ask for help.)

The Filipinos were deployed by Samarec in the Philippines but there is no counterpart agency in the Kingdom that they could ask for help.

Their request for help will be referred to the Philippine Embassy, which will endorse it to the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Riyadh for any assistance that could be extended them.
