Mother’s Day is approaching, and for many of us, it will be a happy celebration.

Not so for the community of 38 families of informal dwellers in Sitio Kawayan, Sucat in Paranaque.

Looming above their heads is an eviction notice for June 30, 2024. The barangay has given them just enough time to finish the schooling of the children for this year, then their homes will be demolished to make way for the expansion of the C5.

In this community, 10 women live, and they are employed as sewers in the small social enterprise “Pamaypay ni Nanay.”

They have produced hand-sewn fabric-covered fans and parols for seven years, utilizing remnants from fashion and wedding designers.

Their children are scholars of the 10-year-old NGO Action for the Care and Development of the Poor in the Philippines (ACAP).

The ten mothers transformed from idle, unproductive women to hardworking skillful artisans whose hand-sewn products are popular among balikbayans and brides as pasalubong and wedding souvenirs.

From timid, undervalued wives, they have evolved into more assertive and income-generating women, and therefore, are more self confident and are taking a proactive role as wives and mothers.

Let’s help these women help themselves.

Proceeds of the sales of the products of “Pamaypay ni Nanay” will go to the relocation funds so these mothers will have a better “Mother’s Day”.

Small bag-friendly Barong fans with appliqués and jusi flowers, no two alike, p700.each, 9″-10″ wide.
