Distressed DH’s ‘thank you’ message is like rain in summer

Receiving complaints from distressed Filipino domestic helpers (DH) is common.

But it is like rain in summer when we receive a “Thank you for the help“ message.

Sometime back, Bainor Abdullah  Mohamad, a DH in the remote mountains of Al Huda near Taif in western Saudi Arabia, sent a message through Facebook Messenger asking for help.

She wanted to be rescued from the mother of her employer Thamer Awwad Altuwairqi, returned to her agency and transferred to another sponsor.

Bainor could not yet go home to Sarangani province because her son, whom she described as a “source of my inspiration“, was only in his third year in his mechanical engineering studies.

It was not her employer residing in Dammam, however, who was paying Bainor’s salary but the sister, Basha Awwad Altuwairqi.

Explaining her reasons for wanting a change of employer, Bainor said she had not received her salaries for the last four months (she was told that she would receive her salaries every five months but she did not agree to this).

Since her employer was residing in Dammam in eastern Saudi Arabia, she asked for her salaries from her employer’s mother who got angry, called her names and said bad words.

“Sabi niya kalimutan ko raw obligasyon kong pinansiyal sa Pilipinas kasi wala raw silang pera,” Bainor said.

(She, the mother, told me to forget about my financial obligations in the Philippines because they did not have money.)

Bainor said she used to call the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Jeddah (POLO Jeddah). Although they took her calls, her situation did not change. She wondered who could ask for help.

Shortly after her case was sent to  Consul General Edgar Tomas “Gary” Q. Auxilian, Bainor sent a text message which said,”Nais ko lang magpasalamat, sir, dahil maayos na ang sistema ng pasahod sa akin.”

(I want to thank you, sir, because the system for the payment of my salary has been fixed.)
