Banana peels are more useful than you think

Very few Filipinos do not eat nor like bananas.

What’s there not to like? The fruit is delicious and nutritious, full of vitamins and minerals. It is also so convenient to eat. You do not need any utensils to enjoy a banana.

The fruit is the ingredient of many healthy foods and even beauty products.

Turns out that this fruit – or, more accurately, its peel – is also quite versatile. Though usually just a fixture in cartoons and visual gags – you know people, even animals and things, slipping because of some carelessly thrown banana peels –  the online Health Support Magazine has compiled from various sources more than 20 reasons why you should not be too quick to toss that peel into the trash can.

Here are some uses for banana peel that the online publication discovered.

         1. Cover for grilled chicken

Make chicken cooked on the grill healthier by removing the skin. Then cover it with banana peel so the meat does not dry out.

           2. Natural fly trap

Keep flies away by making a  trap of natural ingredients. You will need a large yogurt cup, banana skin, hammer and a nail. Make holes at the bottom of the yogurt cup with the hammer and nail, place the banana inside, turn it over, and place it near the food that you are trying to protect. Flies will get into the sweet smell in the holes, but there is no way out of the yogurt cup.

             3. Get rid of aphids

Make a hole about 2.5 centimeters deep under the plants, then put 2-3 banana peels in it. Aphids and ants will sense the potassium content of the banana and eat them instead of the plants. You can repeat the process every second week to keep the plants protected.

               4. Bake a cake

If you want to bake a quick and delicious cake but have used up all your bananas, use the peels. Put the banana peels and 1/2 cup of water in a blender until you get an aromatic, smooth, dark brown mush.

In a separate bowl, mix egg yolks, butter, and sugar until combined, add the banana skin puree, baking powder, flour, and mix well. Whip up the egg whites and gently fold into the mixture, pour it all in a cake pan and bake for 45 minutes – or until the cake is done.

                5. Soothe an itchy insect bite

Rub the red, inflamed bites with the inside of the banana peel. The banana polysaccharides infiltrate the skin to reduces the swell.

                 6. Reduce wrinkles and puffy eyes

For a quick way to refresh tired skin or a budget-friendly and natural anti-wrinkle treatment, let the banana peel help. Place a small banana peel under your eyes or mix it with an egg yolk and apply it on your face for five minutes then wash it off.

                  7. Cheap and simple teeth whitening

Rub freshly washed teeth with the inside of the banana shell every day for about two minutes. Salicylic acid in bananas gently bleaches teeth, effectively eliminating dirt that causes discoloration.

                    8. Remove scratches from leather shoes

Gently rub the damaged area with the inside of the banana shell and wipe it with a clean cloth. Potassium in the banana penetrates the leather and reduces scratches.

                   9. Clean indoor plants

Gently rub the leaves of the plants with the inside of the banana peel. It not only releases them from dust and dirt, but also feeds them. In addition, a natural light comes from the leaves of the plants. Potassium from the peel also serves as a nutrient for the plant.

                   10. Remove splinter without pain

Tear off a small piece of the banana skin, place it with the inside side down on the injury, then hold for 30 minutes. Enzymes in the shell infiltrate the skin and move the thread toward the skin surface. The result is that you can pick it out without skin irritation.

                     11. Pain reliever

Just put the banana peel directly on the painful area and leave it there for 30 minutes. Or you can prepare a cream with a mix of banana peel and some kind of vegetable oil, which also can help in pain relief.

                   12. Skin softener

Enzymes, acids, antioxidants, and nutrients in the banana peel have a nourishing, emollient and moisturizing effect. Place the white half of the banana skin on your feet, fix it with a sticky tape. Take a thin sock on and leave it there overnight. Clean your feet thoroughly in the morning. You can repeat it every two or three weeks.

                    13. Facial mask

                   14. Meat tenderizer

Wrap the heavier meat in a banana peel. This will not only make the grilling faster, but the meat will also be more crunchy and smoother.                      15. Silver polisher

When silver begins to lose its shine, use a banana peel. Inside the banana shell, there are substances like potassium that purify the metal.

Put the banana peel into the blender.

Rub the silver with this paste for a few minutes.

              20. Cheer up!

The tryptophan protein in bananas keeps us well-fed, healthy and happy. The protein helps the body produce serotonin and dopamine, which are partly responsible for our sense of happiness. As the banana peel is also full of useful ingredients, after a

thorough washing, use the whole fruit for a banana shake.

                21. Goodbye stress!

Bananas and their peel have a calming effect, thanks to their tryptophan component. They help to overcome stress due to their high tryptophan content.

Tryptophan is one of the eight essential amino acids. It is needed for the production of niacin (vitamin B3).

             22. Remove Warts

Using a fresh banana, cut a small square piece out of the banana skin. It is best to use a banana that just started to turn from green to yellow. Clean the area you want to treat.
